Podcast

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A podcast is a series of digital-media files, which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. The term podcast, like broadcast, can refer either to the series of content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also called podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster.

The term is a blend of the words "iPod" and "broadcast",[1] the Apple iPod being the brand of portable media player for which the first podcasting scripts were developed (see history of podcasting). Such scripts allow podcasts to be automatically transferred to a mobile device after they are downloaded.[2] As more devices other than iPods became able to synchronize with podcast feeds, the term was redefined by some parties as an abbreviation for the backronym "Personal On Demand broadCASTING".

Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added, using an aggregator or feed reader capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom.

Carl Jung's Secret Book

Carl Jung was a giant in the dawn of the age of psychoanalysis. A student of Freud who broke with Freud. Champion of the individual spiritual quest as doorway to the universal.

In midlife, he looked for his own soul and found nothing. Dug deeper, for years, late at night, recording wild visions: gods and demons, winged snakes and crocodiles. Found his soul’s footing, but feared he’d be called insane.

Jung said his “red book,” in which he recorded his visions, was the base of everything else he did. But it was locked away for years in a Swiss vault. Now it’s out. We have it.

This hour, On Point: Carl Jung’s red book.

The Individual vs. The Collective on The Internet

This audio is from an invited presentation I recently gave at Sonoma State University. The class is called Person in Society and it is being taught by Dr. Shepherd Bliss who I interviewed on Shrink Rap Radio #82 almost a year ago exactly. I was interested in exploring the impact of new communication and social networking technologies on the lives of these students. I wanted my presentation to be as interactive as possible and, after my introductory remarks, the students made a number of excellent comments. The whole session ran a bit long. I’ve tried to shorten it by taking out several sections of me talking about Shrink Rap Radio and podcasting generally. I hope you find it of some interest. I promised to make internet stars of those students who spoke up!

A Jungian View of The Feminine in Film

John Beebe, M.D., is co-author, along with Virginia Apperson of the new book, The Presence of The Feminine in Film. You may recall that Dr. Beebe, was my guest on show #140 which dealt with Jungian Typology. Dr. Beebe is a Jungian analyst in practice in San Francisco. He received degrees from Harvard College and the University of Chicago medical school. He is a past President of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, where he is currently on the teaching faculty, as well as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California Medical School, San Francisco. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
An avid film buff, Beebe frequently draws upon American movies to illustrate how the various types of consciousness and unconsciousness interact to produce images of Self and shadow in the stories of our lives that Jung called individuation. Dr. Beebe is particularly well known for his elaboration in C.G. Jung’s theory of psychological types.
